Study Groups

Study GroupsMaine ASCD facilitates a number and variety of Study Groups each year. These events bring together small groups of educators (usually no more than 12-15 participants) around a common topic to meet, discuss and learn in depth. Study Groups typically meet once per month over the course of four months and are faciliated by a group mentor who has advanced knowledge of the content area. A professional book is included in the registration fee and will be available at the first meeting.

Maine ASCD Study Groups - 2008 - 2009

The Literacy Principal

A Study Group for School Administrative Leaders

ReadingAs accountability in our schools continues to grow, educators know that in order for our students to be successful in the world, we must all be teachers of reading and writing. The Literacy Principal by David Booth builds background knowledge needed for administrators to evaluate and support literacy initiatives in their own schools. This book provides practical suggestions that administrators can implement immediately. This text based study group offers an opportunity to network with other administrators and share successes and challenges. Come and be part of creating more literate schools.

Becoming a Literacy Leader

A Study Group for Literacy Specialists and Reading Coaches

LiteracyBecoming a Literacy Leader by Jennifer Allen, a practicing literacy specialist from the Waterville Public Schools, offers countless practical examples of how to function in schools as a literacy leader. Topics include intervention models, professional learning, communication strategies, among many others. The discussion around the text will be rich and varied. This is a natural compliment to another Maine ASCD study group based on the text The Reading Specialist.

Exploring the Reading Workshop

A Study Group for Classroom Teachers, Literacy Specialists, and Leaders

ReadingAs a follow up to Frank Serafini’s popular spring workshop hosted by Maine ASCD, this study group will extend and support new learning as practitioners develop a reading workshop, an organizational framework for reading instruction. The study group will read, discuss, and react to Around the Reading Workshop in 180 Days, sharing ideas related to organizing and implementing the reading workshop in their classroom.

We plan to offer this study group again this fall. Stay tuned.

Leadership in Literacy: A Study Group for Literacy Specialists

Literacy

The role of the school literacy specialist is a complex one. The nature of their jobs varies, from professional developer to mentor to diagnostician to teacher to coach to administrator. They also often work in isolation organizing and managing school-wide literacy programs with little opportunity for professional support. This study group will examine the complex role of the specialist using the text The Reading Specialist: Leadership for the Classroom, School, and Community by Rita M. Bean, as well as selected readings by the participants which could include professional books or articles.

Each session meets four times over four months. Limited to 15 per location. Register Early!

Where and When

We plan to offer this study group again this fall. Stay tuned.

Participant costs associated with study groups can be supported with Title I, II, V funds. Study Groups also follow the coaching model supported by NCLB.
