Maine ASCD proudly announces our FALL CONFERENCE on Friday, October 29, 2010 at Keeley Banquet Center in Portland. The book The Art and Science of Teaching provides a comprehensive framework for teaching that integrates the work found in three previous books: Classroom Instruction that Works, Classroom Management that Works, and What Works in Schools. The Art and Science of Teaching outlines 10 critical areas of instructional practice, along with specific strategies for each area.  In this session, Bea addresses how teachers and administrators might supervise (that is ensure and support) the art and science of teaching in a way that keeps the focus of attention on student learning (as opposed to use of specific instructional strategies) and allows individual teachers flexibility and creativity in their teaching practices. It also provides a new framework for lesson observation and lesson design that breaks lessons into basic segments, each with its own expectations regarding teacher behavior. Participants will gain an understanding of:

* the science and research behind strategies that have a high probability of increasing student achievement;

* the complexity of the teaching/learning process;

* the 10 essential questions to guide lesson design;

* practical strategies for implementing the 10 essential questions;

* how teacher instructional rounds can be used to enhance collaboration and improve pedagogical skills;

* how a school or district can use The Art and Science of Teaching to develop and implement a comprehensive approach to supervision.

This workshop will provide useful and inspiring information for practicing and pre-service all teachers, school and district leaders, particularly principals, curriculum directors, superintendents. Cost for Maine ASCD members is $99 ($139 all others) which includes lunch.
