Calling all teachers, principals, district leaders, school counselors, social workers, substance abuse counselors, alternative and adult educators, special educators, pre-service teachers, parents, and school committee members! Do you care about ways to engage our students? All schools share the responsibility of nurturing the whole child by taking care of both academic and social development. While effective instruction and good intentions begin to address a child's needs, one key factor is necessary: engagement. When children are engaged - involved, motivated, inspired, and attached- they are most responsive to school and more likely to grow academically and socially.

During this one day conference, participants will work with ASCD speaker and author BOB SULLO who will engage them in a conversation about what works with students, the many factors associated with engagement, and specific strategies to make a difference. An educator for over thirty years, Bob Sullo has been an English teacher, adjustment counselor, school psychologist, and administrator. Over the course of his career, he has worked with both regular education and special education students from pre-K through graduation in elementary, middle, and high school. Bob now provides staff development on a full-time basis and has provided workshops to educators and parents in more than 30 states, Canada, South America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.  Bob's books include Teach Them To Be Happy  (New View Publications, 1993), Inspiring Quality in Your School (NEA Professional Library, 1997), Activating the Desire to Learn (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, 2007), Managing to Inspire: Bringing Out the Best in Those You Supervise (iUniverse, 2007), The Inspiring Teacher (NEA Professional Library, 2008), and The Motivated Student (ASCD, 2009).

Participants will also select two break-out sessions at the conference, presented by Bob Sullo and local practitioners, to provide applications of important topics associated with engagement. Some of the local presenters are:

PENDER MAKIN of the Real School in Windham, Maine will lead a session, Strategies for Engaging At Risk Learners.
